Inductive Bible Study of John: Chapter 1 1-5

(This article is a reprint if you will of an article I used on my BibleRunner blog however after the 1st two editions we’ll be in brand new material).

Introduction

Hello everyone, I’m sorry this took so long to get online but I’ve been putting it off to be honest because I wanted to be sure to get it right. Just today I realized that I should simply get it up, as God has already prepared the hearts of those who are going to read it and find perhaps some more clarity and depth to the Word than they realized. I hope this ongoing study blesses you as much as it does me.

How I’ll Break Up Each Study

A short word is needed to clarify how I’ll arrange each study even though it might in the end seem exceedingly obvious. Basically I’ll take a section of scripture generally no longer than 7 verses and I’ll put the whole scripture at the top of the study. After this I’ll then break it down one verse at a time with the notes following each individual verse. Finally I’ll do a recap of the most important things we’ve learned from the study of this section of scripture.

John 1:1-5

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

(All scripture quotations are from the ESV- English Standard Version of the Bible).

So let’s get to it! Follow me after the break!

John 1:1

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

At the very start before all things that were created there was the Word (God the Son/Jesus)- Jesus was with God and Jesus WAS God.

Jesus was God and was always God, He was there with the Father at Creation. He was not as some teach the first thing that was created but is Himself the Architect of Creation. Jesus was Just as much God then as He is still God now and will always and forever be God. He was never elevated to the position of God, He has ALWAYS been God.

Also of note is the The Word is synonymous with The Bible…the Scriptures…so Jesus was the scriptures but living and breathing.

John 1:2

2 He was in the beginning with God.

He was with God at the beginning.

He lived in Glory as God before the World and the Heavens were created. He lived in Heaven and recieved great praise from the Angels and reigned in Glory.  (John 17:5)

John 1:3

3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Jesus, The Word, was the creative power of God. God spoke and His Word created all things. Since God’s Word, Jesus who is God was the Author of Creation (not to mention the new creation that comes through Salvation) nothing whatsoever has been created without the Word of God Jesus Christ speaking it into existence.

Also since Jesus is God and the creator of all things He cannot be Michael the Archangel who is a created being.

4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

He was born on this earth spiritually alive, with eternal spiritual life. As He walked the dusty roads and taught and healed the people His words- brought the light of the Spiritual rebirth to those who Believed. And in that way Christ smuggled into a dead and fallen creation, life, true life. And He alone was the light of men, the only hope of Salvation and reconciliation.

John 1:5

5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

In John’s time he saw Jesus and saw that light shine, he saw the start of Jesus life of ministry which includes the Cucifixion, Death, Burial, and Resurrection- but the darkness couldn’t overcome God. And the Ascension proved that.

Even now in this day and age the light, which is now housed through the Holy Spirit indwelling all who have believed unto salvation  and although getting smaller because of Apostacy still has not nor will it ever be overcome by the darkness of this fallen creation.

What We’ve Learned

1: Jesus is God.

2: Jesus created all things and He Himself has always existed. (God the Son-Jesus Christ).

3: Jesus is the Word made flesh. The walking scriptures.

4: In Him was/is life. In fact He smuggled spiritual life into a fallen creation. Because of His ministry (see above) we can now be spiritually reborn. Be cause He died and rose again, we as believers will do likewise.

5: His life is still shining in the darkness. Through God the Holy Spirit’s indwelling of the new believer we are sealed unto Salvation and not only that but we are used as vessels broken and cracked as we are to shine the light of life into this fallen creation. The light of life will NEVER be snuffed out.

Thanks for joining me! Next time we’ll be taking a look at John 1:6-11 so feel free to read ahead- I hope this study blesses you!

All Glory to God!
